So the year is almost over, thank god! I’m just going to reflect on the year, the semester and everything about my freshman year. Let me just start off by saying, I love Virginia tech. I am so glad I chose to go here, and I have no regrets about it. I am not going to drop out on engineering. I came into college thinking it was going to be challenging and I would actually have to try, and guess what? I did. College is not easy, and I learned that the hard way. My first semester was hard, but I got the hand of school once second semester rolled around. I’m still not on top of my classes, but it’s a hard transition from high school, where I didn’t do anything to college where I have to do so much work. It was a tough challenge, but I made it through.
Throughout the year I met so many people, which I love. Now that summer is coming up, they are all leaving. I don’t talk to my high school friends anymore, so I don’t know what I’m going to do all summer without my new friends. I’m going to be working, and taking a summer class. I will still have Brian, but you know it gets annoying when you spend every time you have with just one person. I like spending my time with others, mixing it up. When you spend too much time with one person, they start to get annoying and then you don’t want to spend any time with them anymore. I will definitely be visiting people though. Hopefully I will be able to leave work and have some sort of vacation. I will be going to Virginia Beach, Maryland, and New York. Maybe some other places in between.
Summer is so bittersweet. I’m glad I don’t have to go to class anymore, except for my summer class. But all my new friends are leaving, so I’m going to be stuck in Blacksburg alone. Hopefully next year more people will have apartments so they will be staying in town during the summer.
I hope everyone has a great summer.

So how many more of these do we have to do? I feel like I talk about the same things over and over. But this weekend was pretty different than any other. Friday was the 3rd “anniversary,” if that’s what you want to call it, of April 16th. Since I live in Blacksburg, I was here when the tragedy happened and let me tell you, it was scary. I was in high school at the time, sophomore year. I was in Latin class, it was a joke class anyway and our school suddenly went into lock down. No one told us what was going on; we thought it was a terrorist attack, or another killer on the loose. I think this happened either the same year or a year before but some guy in prison went to the hospital because something was wrong with him and he escaped and killed two or three people; we thought it was another thing like that. Well, we were wrong. Anyway, I don’t remember if we got to leave school early or not, but I think we did. In all our classes, after the lockdown, we watched the news and we finally knew what had happened. It was so heart breaking to watch, and it made me sick to my stomach. I called my mom a-sap because she works in Burruss which is right near where the shooting took place, and luckily her and her co-workers were okay.
On a happier note, I walked the 3.2 for 32 and it felt great. It honestly didn’t feel like 3.2 miles, but I think it was because we had company and because we were doing it for a reason. This was the first year that I actually did the walk, but I am glad I did and I’m sad I didn’t in the years before. But then on Saturday I did the big event which was, interesting. =] I was supposed to be with the engineering group but we could find them, so we just joined a group where we knew a few people. It turned out to be fun; we got to paint a porch and the awning that was over it. We went to Christiansburg to an old couples house that had obviously needed help, so I’m glad that I gave back to the community.

Here we go, another blog. Just like last semester these things are getting harder and harder to write. I also haven’t been getting comments, which makes me feel like people aren’t reading this anyway. It’s okay, ill still write it; I need an A in this class. So I’m taking geology and I haven’t been doing the best on the tests, but I finally got a good grade and I’m so happy! I am finally getting the hang of this college thing, and it feels great. The transition between high school and college has been really hard because I actually have to try to get my good grades.
On another topic: JMU this weekend. What the hell happened?! I was on facebook earlier and someone had posted a news article about riots and partygoers at JMU getting tear gassed. Here is the article:
http://www.rocktownweekly.com/news_details.php?AID=46189&CHID=64
Was anyone there and want to explain to me what went down. I came across a video that was kind of scary. It shows police in riot gear and a huge crowd of people that had a dumpster on fire and something that I can’t make out. Here is the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZGSsU3-iiY
This really makes me sad because it makes college students look dumb and immature. I know majority of college students aren’t like this, but it still sends a bad vibe. If something like this happened at tech, I would be embarrassed to be a Hokie. I do not want to be affiliated with any sort of riots that were a consequence of partying. I understand that students are going to party, but what happened at JMU was over the top and embarrassing. The article from above has a bunch of comments about what happened and a lot of the “townies” are sad about it. They are disappointed at the students that started the entire ruckus. The problem is that most of the people that were in the riots were not from JMU; they didn’t care if they ruined the town, it wasn’t theirs. I know that a lot of people from Tech did end up going up to JMU this weekend and it would make me sad if they were a part of this.

So this week is Easter! I went home, like usual and I’m here doing homework before dinner. From what I heard, many people weren’t going home for Easter which I find surprising. I know it’s not a long weekend, but you should still go home to celebrate! Yesterday I went over to Brian’s house and we went to the cascades. There, we looked for fossils in our special spot and found some interesting things. There were lots of shells and little worm like things. Speaking of worms, I woke up this morning and found a ring worm on my back! Eww! I am so disgusted with myself. I know they come from showers and locker rooms, but I don’t remember putting my back on the shower or anything. I just don’t know how I got it. I have to cover up my back now because I don’t want people to see it. So embarrassing. So school is almost over, I cannot believe it! I am so worried about finals, two of which are on my birthday!! Ugh, so annoying. But then we get to move out of the dorms, I am so ready to get out of them! I got freaking ring worm because of them! I just hate being in a closed space with one room where you do everything. Plus you have to share this tiny room with someone you don’t even know! I think it would be much better if I was actually friends with my roommate and my hall mates, but I just don’t get along with them. Most of them are loud and just annoying. Well, this weeks’ weather has been amazing! I got burned on my left shoulder, but not my right shoulder. I don’t understand it sometimes. I might go outside today and tan a little bit. My white skin is so blinding when summer starts because it hasn’t had any sun all winter.

great weekend

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was full of weird shit, and homework, like usual. So Friday I went to Brians parent’s house and we had dinner over there, which was great. PK’s pizza is the best! We played fun card games too, and it was just great fun. On Saturday I had a lacrosse game that was 2 hours away and it was at 12, so we had to leave at 9 in the morning. We got there, and no one was there! The gate was locked and the field was empty. We called the coach of the other team; turns out she cancelled the game because of the frost last night at 6. She only called one person, and they didn’t even answer their phone, so no one knew that the game was cancelled. So we stayed there and practiced and then got kicked off of the field. Not a fun day. Later that day, I went home for dinner, and my dad just got a new grill and we had steaks that night; they were delicious! After we ate there, Brian and I went to Maggie moos for some ice cream with our friends. We get there and there are major douche-bags there. They were one some sort of drugs, like steroids and I think they were drunk. Anyway, we get there and we over hear a guy say, “Dude, we’ll give you 5 bucks if you do it.” So the guy that was working at the time was Dom, he’s so cool, heard that too and was ready for shit to go down. So one of the guys goes to the bathroom, comes out and steals a cake!!! Dom freaks out and starts chasing him out the door. It was great, and Dom got the cake back. It was so intense; I guess you would have had to be there. After that Band I go back to the dorm, on the way back I get pulled over by a cop! Ugh, he tells me that my license registration expired in august of 2009! Ha, so it’s all good. It was a bit scary, but it ain’t no thang. So that was my weekend

Monday, March 22, 2010

So last week was Saint Patrick’s Day, I hope everyone enjoyed their green beer! I didn’t do much because I had a huge physics test on Friday, which was not fun at all! I was stuck studying for that, I’m not even sure if my studying does much. I was so mad when I had to study for physics and Friday’s weather was sooo nice! I’m so glad spring is finally here, I got to go home and grab all my shorts and it’s great! So this weekend I went home and had corned beef and cabbage! I love St. Patrick’s Day food, it’s the best! It was died green, but cabbage is green! We also had cornbread, which is amazing! I love going home for a good meal. The food on campus is great, but nothing beats eating with the family. I especially love Owens breakfast on Sundays; it’s soo good!
So am I the only one that thinks this semester went by way too fast!? Compared to last semester, this one is going by fast. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but it’s got to be true. We are already more than half way through this semester, and then it’s summer! I’m not sure how good my summer is going to be because all the friends I made are going to leave, and then I’ll be alone. It’s so sad. But then when school starts again, everyone will come back, and I’ll be in my apartment and I will totally (somewhat) be on my own. It’s kinda scary to think about, you know, living on your own. I’m really excited about it, but at the same time I’m scared. I know my parents will still be like right around the corner, but it’s still weird. It’s like I was waiting for this to happen and now that it is happening, it’s scary!
Well, until next time,
Melissa

SPRING!

Spring break! I hope everyone had a good break, I know I did! On Monday I went to Richmond with Brian and had a great time. I went there to go shopping but I didn’t find too many things. I loved all the shops there, but it seemed like they still had their winter stuff out, and I was looking for spring things. I went to H&M, which is the best store ever, and they had nothing. I was looking forward to finding a really cute dress and maybe some skirts, but nope; they still had all their winter stuff out. I went to the zoo too! It was a very sketchy zoo though. They had the cheetahs right next to the zebras; who does that? The cheetah really wanted that zebra too. They had huge tortoises, and a lot of monkeys. The one part that was the best was when we were talking to the macaws. We would say hello and they would say it back, and one even whistled at us! Another fun part was watching the penguins eat, they were so cute. They were also very picky, once that fish hit the ground, they wouldn’t eat it! They were definitely spoiled. It was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait until summer where I can go on vacation a lot more. Can you believe that we only have 6 more weeks left of school?! My parents brought it to my attention and it really freaked me out. We are almost done with a quarter of our college careers! What the hell!? I don’t know about you guys, but that’s really scary. We are growing up way too fast.
Okay, one other thing before I go, no one in my physics class wants to sit next to me. I don’t understand it. I feel really lame because no one ever wants to sit near me. Right now there are two seats to my left and two to my right. Ugh! OH, someone just sat down, so one to my right now. That feels a little better.
Until next time,
Melissa
